Student Spotlight: Sabrina Mohamud
Posted on 05/03/2024

Sabrina Mohamud is a senior at Metro Heights Academy (MHA). Recently, she spoke with her principal, Crystal Tucker.

Sabrina lives in Columbia Heights with her family and is the oldest of eight children. Before she came to MHA, she attended Columbia Heights High School. After a tough period of time and a suicide attempt in 2022, Sabrina was advised to switch to Metro Heights Academy.

"I have struggled a lot with my mental health over the years, and at times, I didn't feel like I had a place where I belonged," said Sabrina. "Metro is very different because it's more hands-on, teachers communicate about grades regularly, they check in on mental health daily, and when something is wrong, teachers understand. It's helpful to go at your own pace, especially during challenging times. I feel less alone and less isolated here at Metro. I love the 1:1 time I get with teachers, and while teachers are still professional, they really care.”

In the fall of 2023, she started with 40 credits remaining to graduate. As of April 29, 2024, she has only three credits left and will graduate at the end of May. Sabrina is a true senior this year and plans to walk with both graduating classes. She was also invited to give a speech for the MHA commencement. Congratulations, Sabrina!
